Dedicated in 2010 by Hill School alumni, this the Memorial Room honors those who served in the armed forces during or after their time at Hill. The stunning stained glass windows, and engraved wooden walls lend a somber sense to this room.
When we reflect about the time that Hill has been around, it's shocking to consider the amount of conflicts that have occurred since our doors opened in 1851. In terms of American history, Hill has seen the Civil war as well as the Spanish-American. Taking into account global conflicts, the Hill has been through War World War I, World War II, the Korean conflict, the Vietnam war, the Gulf War, the Iraq War, the Afghanistan War, and countless other smaller scale battles throughout the history of its existence. Due to the ages of those in attendance, we have students and alumni who were either drafted to serve in those wars or who enlisted themselves.
Though the names on the panels on the wall only date up to 1920, there are still hundreds. In the time of the American involvement in World War I alone, there are a total of about 160 names on the panels. Predating that, there was a surge of enlistments in 1908-1916. The beautiful stained glass windows are all dedicated to specific alumni that died in the wars, and they depict different symbols that altogether encapsulate the legacies of brave soldiers that served in the armed forces. Along with this tribute, there is a gold plaque on the wall that has the names of the 40 of the deceased dating from 1899-1918. Below that, there is a record of those who served in World War II.
The memorial room is a stunning tribute to those who have served our country. It is important that we don't minimize the significance of these battles, and the names that line the walls of the Memorial Room are a moving tribute that brings perspective to the effects of the wars that have impacted us as a country and as a school.
