The Hill School Archives is home to countless unique items with fascinating histories. Through this blog, we hope to learn more about these artifacts, the stories behind them, and the work that has gone into organizing and compiling the history of our school.

Sports at Hill

1884:

- Intramural baseball was started at Hill, with different teams within the school playing against each other.


1885:

- Stephen B. L. Penrose organized football at the Latin at the school (taught for a few years, first coach)


1890s:

- frequently played college freshman such as the Swarthmore scrubs, Haverford scrubs, Pottstown Athletic Association, Cheltenham, Ursinus, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania

- Basketball starts

- Track starts led by Michael Sweeney, for whom the Sweeny gym is named. Along

put track on map with Hill's first science teacher Henry Colbath.


1893:

- Competitive tennis started


Football circa 1900

1903:

- Hill started playing Lawrenceville, Hotchkiss, Penn Charter, other private high schools, in competitive sports.

- The Quad was the old football field


1910-20

- Basketball discontinued for a time. Professor (Matthew Meigs) thought that the winter term academic work was too strenuous, and basketball was getting in the way of students' ability to complete work. Eventually, they continued it due to student discontent.

1915:

- Soccer started as a competitive sport


1920:

- Hill started playing other teams in other competitive sports besides football.


Campus in the early 1900s. Underneath Upper School is the outdoor gym, and the indoor gym and pool were in the third addition of the Meigs House.

1942:

- Wrestling started


1949:

Swimming started and Cunningham swimming pool was built

1953-54:

- Ice hockey ring built next to the athletic center

- Roof added in 1964

- Before the rink was built, ice hockey was on the Dell

- Ed Hall was a coach who was a massive proponent of ice hockey

- Lacrosse started


1972

- Water polo started under James Weaver


1998

- Women's sports added and growing
