Before and After Photos of Hill's Buildings

The Hill has been around for more than 150 years, and it has changed many times. Internally and externally, the Hill is ever-changing, welcoming new students and teachers, and refurbishing and rebuilding new classroom buildings designed to help its students learn and grow. The Hill school campus went from being simply a house with a dorm addition on it into to the current campus, which has over 14 classroom buildings and dormitories for its students and staff. And, with the Chapel, Dining Hall, and Quadrivium buildings being built and redone, we think that it is a good time to reflect on what Hill has been through to get to this state. A few years ago, Mr. Jeffries did an exhibit on the how the buildings at the Hill have changed over the years, so we worked with him and turned his research into a blog post form.

The first pictures are of the Upper School. The first picture of the dormitory was taken from 1911-1920, around World War I. The bottom one was taken more recently, and now, there are no ivy vines climbing the building. This was the case for many buildings back in the early 1900s.

These pictures are taken from High Street (behind the Science building). The first one was taken pre-1899, because the retaining wall that stands there today was not built yet. In 1899, the only building that stood in view was the Meigs House.

The first picture was a picture of the school in the early 1900s. To the left you will see the old Middle School Building, and to the right is the Chapel. The Chapel was overgrown with ivy, and in the 1904s, it was completely covered in the plant. The next picture is the same scene today. To the left is the current academic building, and to the left is the Chapel.

This library was built after the sanitarium was moved near the early 1900s. The ground floor used to be an assembly room , much like the CFTA. New additions were built onto the library around the 1970s, and the room was remodeled.

This building is the Cottage Dormitory. It was built in the 1850s and torn down in 1959, replaced by Rolfe. As the popularity of the Hill School expanded, the single dormitory in the Meigs House was not enough to house the influx of students.

The old outdoor athletic enter, which was comprised of a court and an outdoor track, was located near the Upper School building before the current Athletic Center was built. The pool in the first picture was located in the basement of the third addition to the Meigs House, behind the Middle School building.
